Las Vegas Hotel and Casino
This is a Great Story - Read it and learn how to beat the line at Las Vegas Hotel and Casino shows!
The phrase is "One only," not "One and only"
By Col. Nemo Turner, Montreal and Las Vegas
A few decades ago, I had a government contract to come to Nevada to do magic shows for different municipalities all over the state. I spent one week in Reno and three weeks in fabulous Las Vegas.
Since I was performing for children and doing family shows in libraries, small theatres and recreation centers during the day, I was always free in the evening. That's when I planned to see the stage shows in the casinos, especially those that had a magic act in the revue.
To see these big Las Vegas Hotel and Casino shows, I had to make a reservation and wait in a long line before being let in. I did this many an evening, until one night something different happened.
When I gave the maitre d' my name for the reservation, he asked me why I had waited in line? "You should never have to wait in any line to see a show," he told me.
I was shocked to hear this! His comment led me to believe that, with all my children's shows and local TV appearances, I must have become a recognizable celebrity. My head started to swell, for I realized that I had finally arrived at stardom! I was now a Las Vegas Hotel and Casino VIP.
I humbly asked why I didn't have to make a reservation to see a show.
"Because you're only one person," he said. "We always have trouble filling in the empty pockets at the tables."
He went on to tell me that most people come in couples or an odd-numbered group, and that can leave an empty chair to fill. Therefore I should always go to the front of the line and tell the maitre d', "One only." Then I can be ushered in immediately.
My ego quickly deflated, but I said, "Of course," as though I already knew all about that, and I hurriedly walked right in.
The next evening I tried this ploy, and it worked beautifully. I walked past a long line-up to a casino show and right up to the maitre d'. Everyone in line gave me that "Who does he think he is?" look.
"One only," I whispered to the maitre d'.
He smiled and said, "Right this way, sir." I could feel the stares of everyone in the line behind me. I laughed to myself thinking how they must be in awe of seeing a real Las Vegas Hotel and Casino VIP.
